Played this for 3 hours. The planet I started on was barren and muddy. All the tile and unit graphics are kinda dull. Built 4 cities. Explored most of my starting planet. Researched a majority of the first tier and a little of the 2nd tier. Did not build any spaceships. The AI was active and looked to be doing sensible things. They were expanding but not as fast as I was.Things for cities cost a lot of money to build. Units don't cost as much but they are very easily lost. I was playing a research race so that was quick for me. I've played hundreds of hours of 4x games. Refunded this game. Why? My goodness is it slow. Turn after turn of waiting to be able to do this or that. Gates preventing key things. Building up my cities was very slow, not very interesting and didn't generate much impact. Exploration was slow and eventually resulted in having my scouts one shot by a random mob. Research? Half of what I researched I couldn't use right away. Maybe in another 50 to 100 turns I'd have a use for a particular tech. This game seems to have been developed well but the design is lacking.. This game seems very promising with interesting strategic decisions. It's mostly played on the surface of a randomly generated planet, but you can build ships and travel to other star systems. The factions are distinctive and play differently with interesting unique traits. The most immediate unique trait of the game: you must have a district manned by a citizen in order to collect the resources (food, production, or research) from a tile. The slow rate of population growth makes the early game involve a lot of "next turn," but once you get a couple of medium-sized cities things pick up. You can design custom units with equipment you have researched. Diplomacy and research options are fairly standard, the latter of which is similar to Endless Legend (split into tiers). The "paths" feature gives you bonuses for choosing research and completing quests in a certain theme. Edicts give you some options as well. I had a problem loading my first saved game, but did not have any issues loading my second. Already a fairly complete game, I'll be looking forward to improvements in Pax Nova throughout early access.. tl;dr - Some really nice ideas, but not enough real game to justify the price currently. Wait for release to see if it becomes more than a 4x lite title.I really want to recommend the game, but at this point I can't in good faith say it's going to be a solid game in only 3-6 months. At the current time there's just not really much to it. Technologies are incredibly boring, with most being a slightly higher passive bonus that the tier before it. This is especially noticeable with weapons tech, as you just get bigger numbers with a higher cost, outside of a few variations that require a special resource to activate. The AI alternates between genocide and blind passivity with no seeming reason. Neither AI outlook has much intelligence, with most games being won within an hour or two tops without any real challenge, even on the hardest difficulty. Note that in my 5 hours played I've beaten the game 3 (THREE!) times, two of those on "hard" difficulty. The big selling point to the game is the inclusion of a space theater of war, but you have to actively avoid winning to see space. Everything in the game has a credits\/money cost, including military units, so if you're at war you won't have the spare credits to even think of a space fleet. The factions are nicely laid out, but are considerably imbalanced; at least this particular gripe can be fixed readily before release. For all the rest, the game feels like it's going to need a huge rework that a small studio possibly can't accomplish within 6 months.. Not very hard but a pretty solid 4X never the less.It has some original ideas, like the space and terrain gameplay, and it looks amazing for an indie game.It is still an unfinished product at the moment, so there is a lot of work for the devs until release. Anyway, i will keep playing it for sure, and hope that it could reach its full potential. For now i give an enthusiastic thumbs up for a job well done, i am sure they can use the push, and lets hope they can deliver a polished product in the end.
